HISPANISH HERITAGE MONTH LAS PIÑATAS
People create piñatas native Mexico long before the explorers arrived from Spain. • The piñata represented the gods they worshiped the natives. • The piñatas were made of clay, NOT OF papier-mâché like modern days!
Spanish missionaries used the piñata to teach Christian ideas.
(to display a colored piñata) They said piñatas represented hope and charity. • (to show a blindfold) The person wearing the blindfold represents faith.
(to display a stick decorated) The stick was used to hit the piñata represented what was good and what was over evil. • (by showing a plastic bag of candy and toys) Surprises falling from a broken piñata are prizes for having faith!
Everyone can enjoy the candy falling from the piñata! • That shows how we are all justified by faith. • These days, piñatas come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. • They are a fun way to celebrate special occasions. • Everyone loves a piñata! • [The END]
Simple Paper Bag Piñata • This is a very simple version of a Piñata making it a suitable craft to do with large groups of children. It's a lot less messy than the paper mache version. • The one in the photo was made by my 8 year old. Age 3+ could make this craft. Materials: • paper lunch bag • newspaper • candy or other treats • different colors of tissue paper • scissors, • Glue sticks, • hole punch, • string Instructions: • Put candy or treats into the paper bag • Scrunch up a piece of newspaper and put it in the bag. Repeat until the bag is full, with the newspaper about 1 inch below the top of the bag (we need the inch so we can close the bag later). • Cut strips of tissue paper 3 to 6 inches wide and long enough to wrap around the bag (the wider you cut the strips, the quicker the craft will go). • Fringe the strips by using your scissors to cut about 1/2 way up each strip, 1 to 4 inches apart
