Can you tell the hidden ingredients? By: Kayla Susko
Background I developed the idea for this project over dinner with my family. Often at dinner my Dad or Mom would ask what seasonings I thought were in the meal. Garlic was always obvious, but I’d miss the little things like salt or sugar. From this I came up with the idea to test others ability to taste the hidden ingredient.
Objective To determine the sensitivity of taste buds in differing age groups.
Hypothesis If I increase the amount of sugar with each trial, then the participant will be able to identify the at 1 ½ tbs. of sugar added.
Materials • 1 cup per person (20) • Salt • Sugar • Water • Measuring cup • Tbsp. for measurements
0 Same taste Something is different
Procedures 1. Fill a cup with 1/2 cup of water. 2. Add 2 tbs. salt. 3. Ask the person to drink the water and choose what they taste from the scale. 4. Record data and repeat steps 1-2, rinsing out the cup and remeasuring the water, add 1/2 tbs. of sugar and redo step 3 until you reach 2 tbs. of sugar in the cup.
