  1. Distributed Computer Security Lab

  2. Goals of the Project • To establish a distributed lab between UHCL and UHD • Develop a model for smaller colleges/universities to connect to DCSL for sharing the resources • Facilitate students and faculty to perform distributed experiments without intruding the campus network • Support the module-based curricular model and the new security courses at UHCL/UHD • Disseminate results from the project to facilitate other universities to develop their own computer security lab or to connect to the DCSL

  3. The Challenges Involved • Need to protect campus networks • Need to access the Internet • Difficulty in allocating various resources for different assignments • Difficulty to simulate enterprise/departmental level network environment • Resource needs for students to develop their solutions • Easy and secure access to the resources • Incorporation of latest technological development • Overhead of configuring and maintaining the test bed for different assignments http://sce.cl.uh.edu/yang/research/DCSL RMCCSC04.pdf

  4. High Level Design Figure 1: A Model of Cross-campus Distributed Computer Security Lab (DCSL)

  5. Our Progress We’re here! Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3 • Fine tuning the prototype network and laying the ground work for target network • Configuration of VLANs on the testbed • Configuring remote VPN access on Galileo (Windows 2003 based) • Building the target network • Setting the security policy • Configuring server network • Configuring site to site VPN • Setting up the testbed network • Building of the prototype network • Configuring the Windows Active directory, IAS, RADIUS and Web server • Configuring the rules for the internal and border firewall • Setting up internet access
