The Pennsylvania Scrapbook Project OUR MISSION STATEMENTHarrisburg Academy offers an academically challenging and globally minded liberal arts education that encourages each student to reach his or her full potential. In our commitment to excellence, we provide tools and teach skills that will prepare students to thrive and succeed in college and in their future endeavors. In essence, this project helps students to see their place in their local community and beyond that, to the state we live in. This project is a model of how one becomes globally minded through experiences, research, exploration, and knowledge. • How do we learn about the places we travel or that interest us? • How do we find our way around an environment that is new to us? • How do we find activities that will enrich our cultural experience of a place? • How do we understand various forms of governance? • How do we learn about the ecosystems and natural resources as we travel? • What does history tell us about where we are?

  3. Learning Competencies & Outcomes The PA Scrapbook Project addresses several third grade learning competencies from four curricular areas. The following document shows how the skills addressed in completing the PA Project align with these core competencies. Social Studies: In Pennsylvania History, students should be able to: Cultural awareness: Recognize the contributions of many different peoples and cultures Government—understanding governmental structures and functions: Understand that the interaction between various groups has not always been easy Historical knowledge and understanding: Be engaged in active learning rather than passive absorption of names, dates, places, and events Cultural Awareness: Learn empathy for others through a variety of activities and interactions Historical knowledge and understanding: Consider how things might have turned out differently had those involved chose different courses of action

Learning Competencies & Outcomes Social Studies: Students should also be able to: Research skills: Understand information and concepts comprehension Map and geography skills: Use maps, globes, and charts Research skills: Develops research skills Learning Links: Cultural Awareness: Begin to understand how they belong and are contributing members of our world Natural Resources: Begin to see how we meet our needs given our surroundings

Learning Competencies & Outcomes Computer Science: Research Skills: Demonstrate more and different uses of technology Research Skills: Successfully use internet including e-mail Symbolic knowledge—recognizing symbols that relate to places and history: Create multimedia presentations Science: Natural Resources and nature of PA region: Ask questions and make observations and about objects, organisms, and events

  6. The following chart will explain which items we will complete in class, and show how the how the skills addressed in completing the PA Project align with the core competencies. The skills will be abbreviated, but they correspond to the following list derived from the core competencies for 3rd Grade: • Cultural awareness • Government—understanding governmental structures and functions • Historical knowledge and understanding • Research skills • Map and geography skills • Natural Resources and nature of PA region • Symbolic knowledge—recognizing symbols that relate to places and history

Required Activities: (10 points each) These will all be completed in school. • Draw and color a map of Pennsylvania labeling cities, rivers, mountains, etc. • Choose a famous Pennsylvanian or a current or former president to research and write about (your report should include the 5 W’s (who?, what?, where?, when?, why?) This will be completed in school as part of our Biography Project. • Write a brief report(a paragraph in your own words) on how Pennsylvania got its name (5 W’s) • Create a chart showing the 10 largest Pennsylvania cities by population • A brief history of the Harrisburg Academy. Summarize the information you find in your own words. This can be a handwritten or typed paragraph. (5 W’s) Points from scavenger hunt: 50 Points from required activities: 50 Points for knowledge of information: maximum of 10 Points Points for scrapbook creativity/neatness: maximum of 10 points Total possible points: 120

  11. Additional Information Extra credit points earned will be added to total. We will be creating a Table of Contents and a cover for the binder in class. As we complete items, we will add them to the binder and keep them in order of point value. Requirements and expectations for keeping track of items in the binder will be discussed in class.
