What is a Communication Theory? Communication is the relaying of information A Theory is as the analysis of a set of facts in their relation to one another Simply put: a communication theory is the relaying of the analysis of a set of facts as they pertain to one another
Muted Group Theory Sets out to define why certain societal groups, namely women and minorities, are muted or unheard. First proposed by Edwin Ardener Mainly based on gender perspectives States that; because men and women are different, especially when it comes to the experiences they have, their perceptions of the world are very different.
How/Where Seen? Can be seen in our day-to-day lives Women and men choose different words to describe things. Women and men choose to talk about very different topics (for the most part)-e.g. Men talk about sports/cars. Women talk about fashion/beauty
Why? What women say is said to be muted because it is not as important as what men have to say. Basically, what women have to say, how they say it, and the experiences they have had make them less likely to be heard.
Speech Codes Theory It is based on speech communication within a given community The theory looks into the way different groups communicate based on many factors such as; culture, occupation, and even gender. Dell Hymes was a sociolinguist who constructed a model that would help to define various speech codes within their respective speech communities. The SPEAKING model
SPEAKING Model Situation (setting or scene) Participants (analysis of personalities and social positions or relationships) Ends (goals and outcomes) Acts (message form, content, etc.) Key (tone or mode) Instrumentatlities (channels or modalities used) Norms (framework for producing and processing messages) Genre (interaction type)
Importance to Communication Professionals Much of the communication that goes on in the workplace today consists of the male vs. female dynamic. Provide guidelines on how to create various opportunities for communication among employees. Can be applied to all interfacing communication whether it is among employees or with customers. Allow us observe how our thoughts and actions are shaped by the experiences we have and the environments in which we spend our time. Communication is central to all human experiences.
