The Crucible Journal Entries
Journal #1: Accusation • You and five of your friends have been smoking in the breezeway before school. • Ms. Fitzgerald and Mrs. Gould are grading papers in the “F” wing, and they see you from the classroom. They come into the breezeway, and you and your friends all scatter, except they see smoke coming from one mouth. Cigarette butts litter the path. • At the beginning of 5th period, Mr. Moscatello comes to the door of your classroom and escorts you to the office. The other five kids are already there. • What would you say in Mr. Moscatello’s office when he asks what was going on? Why?
Journal #2: Before Reading • Choose ONE statement that you feel strongly about. Explain your beliefs in your journal (1 paragraph).
Journal #3:Letter to a friend • Many important events take place in Act 1, and these events change the lives of the people in Salem. • Pretend you are one of the characters in The Crucible. Write a letter to a friend in a neighboring town, explaining what has happened in your life during Act 1.
Journal #4: Predictions • We are almost to the end of the play, and we only have one act left to read. • Make predictions about how the play will end. Make at least three predictions, and explain why you think each will happen.
Journal #5: Local Legend • We read articles about a local legend, the tale of the Hookerman. In your journal, invent your own “ghost story” about another spooky local legend. • Make sure to include the following in your story: • Who- who is the ghost or witch? • What- what does he or she do? • Where- where can he or she be seen? • When- when is he or she spotted? • Why- why does he or she haunt the area? • How- how did he or she come to be a ghost? • Your story should be at least two complete paragraphs.
Journal #6: Final Thoughts • Imagine that you are given the task of creating a memorial for the victims of the Salem Witch Trials. The memorial will be built in Salem so visitors can honor the memory of the innocent people who lost their lives. • What would the memorial look like? What would it say? Why would this memorial be an appropriate way to honor the victims?
