  1. By Grace I’m Saved • 1) By grace I’m saved, grace free and boundless; my soul, believe and doubt it not. • Why stagger at this • word of promise?

  2. Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? No! Then this word must true remain: By grace you too will life obtain.

  3. 2) By grace! None dare lay claim to merit; our works and conduct have no worth. God in His love sent our Redeemer,

  4. Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth; His death did for our sins atone, and we are saved by grace alone.

  5. 3) By grace God’s Son, our only Savior, came down to earth to bear our sin. Was it because of your own merit that Jesus died your soul to win?

  6. No, it was grace, and our grace alone, that brought Him from His heav’nly throne.

  7. 4) By grace! This ground of faith is certain; as long as God is true, it stands. What saints have penned by inspiration,

  8. What in His Word our God commands, our faith in what our God has done depends on grace—grace through His Son.

  9. 5) By grace to timid hearts that tremble, in tribulation’s furnace tried, by grace, in spite of fear and trouble,

  10. The Father’s heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure if grace were not my • anchor sure?

  11. 6) By grace! On this I’ll rest when dying; in Jesus’ promise I rejoice; for though I know my • heart’s condition,

  12. I also know my Savior’s voice. My heart is glad, all grief has flown since I am saved by grace alone.

  13. Confession and Absolution • P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. • C: Amen.

  14. P: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar,

  15. let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our • sinful condition.

  16. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

  17. Kneel/Stand

  18. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. • P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you • all your sins.

  19. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of • the Holy Spirit. • C: Amen.

  20. Lenten Litany • P:The word of the cross is a puzzle, a mystery and a stumbling black. Yet in the weakness and shame of the cross God displayed his mighty power and saved us.

  21. Sung response • The Father’s purpose • on the cross our Savior • has fulfilled; the love revealed, the promise • kept in everything • God willed.

  22. P: This is the mystery of • the cross; that the mighty • love and power of God are • revealed in weakness. • C: In the humility and shame of the cross, God’s love for the world was made known.

  23. P: For the word of the cross • is folly to those who • are perishing, but to us • who are being saved • it is the power of God. • C: Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe?

  24. Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? • P: For since, in the wisdom of • God, the world did not know God • through wisdom, it pleased God • through the folly of what we preach • to save those who believe.

  25. C: For the Jews • demand signs and • Greeks seek wisdom, but • we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews • and folly to Gentiles.

  26. P: But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the • wisdom of God. • C: For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

  27. P: The word of the cross is a word of God's saving strength made perfect in the weakness of a shameful death. • C: The word of the cross is the word of God’s love and grace for sinners.

  28. P: He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” • C: There I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

  29. Sung response • When we with Christ his weakness share, His power in us is shown. The all-sufficient grace revealed that claims us as his own.

  30. Prayer of the Day • P: The Lord be with you. • C: And also with you. • P: Let us pray.

  31. Almighty God, by Your great goodness mercifully look upon Your people that we may be governed and preserved evermore in body and soul;

  32. through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. • C: Amen

  33. Ezekiel 37:1-14

  34. The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones.

  35. And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. And I answered, “O Lord GOD, you know.”

  36. Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.

  37. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD.” So I prophesied as I was commanded.

  38. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them.

  39. But there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.”

  40. So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel.

  41. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’ Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people.

  42. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land.

  43. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.”

  44. P: This is the Word of • the Lord. • C: Thanks be to God.

  45. Romans 8:1-11

  46. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.

  47. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

  48. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

  49. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.
