Mass and inertia • Objects have many properties such as color, size, and composition. • The mass of an object is the amount of matter in the object. • The weight of an object is related to the object’s mass. • The more mass an object has, the harder it is to start it moving, slow it down, speed it up, or turn it. • This tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion is called inertia.
Momentum • The momentum of an object in motion is related to how hard it is to stop the object, and can be calculated from the following equation. • Momentum ( in kg x m/s)= Mass (in kg) x Velocity ( in m/s) p=mv
Conservation of MOMENTUM • The law of conservation of momentum states that in a collision, the total momentum of the objects that collide is the same before and after the collision.
Using Momentum Conservation • The law of conservation of momentum enables you to predict how the motions of objects will change after a collision. • Sometimes, the objects that collide will bounce off each other. • In other collisions, objects will stick to each other after the collision.
Which shows an object bouncing off of each other and which one shows the object sticking to each other after the collision?
Colliding and bouncing off When bumper cars collide, they bounce off each other, and momentum is transferred. • The law of conservation of momentum can be used to determine how these objects move after they collide. The two objects must move in opposite directions with the same speed after the collision.
Vocabulary • Mass: The amount of of matter in the object. • Inertia: Tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion. • Momentum: The measure of how hard it is to stop the object, and it depends on the object’s mass and velocity. • Law Of Conservation Of Momentum: The total momentum of objects that collide is the same before and after the collision.

Questions • 1- What are three properties of an object? • Color, size, and composition are properties of an object. • 2- What is the momentum equation? • P= MV • 3- What is the main similarity between velocity and momentum? • Both velocity and momentum have a direction.
