Veterans Affairs Orientation The VA Process and Expectations
Not a student at NC State yet? • This orientation is made for students that have already been accepted into NC State and now need to know how to begin using GI Bill benefits. If you have not yet been accepted into NC State, please visit the link on our website entitled “Thinking about coming to NC State” for a potential student checklist and information about how to get started
Enrollment Process • Your enrollment with the VA office at NC State University is dependent on the Chapter of benefits that you will be using • The next few slides display what items are required for enrollment for each Chapter of benefit • Reminder: Since VA only pays benefits for students enrolled in degree seeking programs, acceptance into the University must occur first

Certification Overview • In order to receive benefits each semester, a student must be certified to VA • Student Responsibilities • Register for classes • Complete Enrollment Worksheet- required every semester • Found on www.ncsu.edu/veterans • Notify CO of any schedule changes • ** Classes must apply towards degree • CO Responsibilities • Report student enrollment to the VA • Process adjustments • Assist students with questions/concerns • *** CO does not have access to payment information- for questions regarding payment, please contact the VA directly at 1-888-442-4551
VA Expectations • VA sends payments • For Chapter 30, 35, 1607 and 1606 this is in the form of a monthly stipend • Chapter 30, 1606 and 1607 must call VA at 1-888-442-4551 or log into WAVE on the first of each month in order for payment to be released • Payment is based on training status- see VA website for current rates of payment • For 33, this is both the BAH and book money to the student in the form of direct deposit and tuition and fees to the school. Book money is paid at $41.67/credit hour and BAH is $1011 for a full month of enrollment. VA only pays in state tuition and fees. If you are out of state for residency, you will be required to make up the difference from in state to out of state rates. Ask about Yellow Ribbon for out of state students. • Time frames • Proration/training status • Cashiers Office • Census Day- when VA payment will arrive at the school for Chapter 33 students • Important Note- the BAH rate listed on this slide was the rate at the time this slide was created. BAH rates are updated annually and may be different at the current time
Payment Deferment • Payments are due to the cashiers office before the start of the semester. • The cashiers office will only defer the amounts on the student account that come DIRECTLY from the VA and/or other Financial Aid • All other amounts can be set up in the GI Bill payment plan system • Past due balances
Payment Plan Examples Total Account Balance: 3893.78
Payment Plan Examples Total Account Balance: $9067.78
Other Chapter 33 Payment Issues • Special Situations • Active Duty students • Students enrolled in online programs • If program is totally online, your monthly stipend is the DE rate and is NOT the same as students who are taking classes on campus. • At least 1 hour must be taken on campus to receive the regular rate
Impact of Schedule Changes • For all Chapters • Payment is based on training status- a reduction in hours can reduce your training time and therefore, reduce your stipend. If VA has already sent any payment at the original training status, a debt will be created on your account and you will owe the difference back to VA • Try not make schedule changes after the start of the semester
Important Notes • Students who plan to switch from Chapter 30 to 33 should request an appointment with the VA Office • Please see a list below of situations in which students should speak with the VA Office about before making decisions • Switching Chapters • Suspensions • Failed Classes • Classes for credit only • Grade exclusions • Retroactive withdraw • Study Abroad • IMPORTANT UPDATE- Effective Fall 2012 VA will no pay longer pay for a study abroad for Chapter 33 students unless it is MANDATORY for graduation
