What is Rapid Prototyping? Rapid Prototyping is an immersive, iterative process of developing something. Begin with an idea, build a model, test the model and fix what breaks. Rapid Prototyping is the right-brain approach to design. Some see Rapid Prototyping as a step in a traditional ADDIE approach. Others see Rapid Prototyping as it's own method. Rapid Prototyping isn't the lazy-man's way... it is hard work.
Why does it work? First to market wins (sometimes) Continuous incremental improvement Represents a real-world method of design (who hasn't made an unsupported decision using ADDIE?) Early success breeds future success When done correctly it develops a shared vision, shared vocabulary, shared definition of success It results in effective products
Why does it fail? Holding onto preconceived notions Not listening to users Reluctance to change design Implementation in improper situations Divergent visions Burnout - Creeping Featurism
