1 KINGS: Plot • Solomon rises in power & wealth • Israel becomes a powerful & stable monarchy • Idolatry & division begin the long process toward Exile • Faithful prophets & kings prolong the process, but can’t stop it
1 KINGS: Major Characters • David – Provides for successor just before his death • Solomon – Israel’s 3rd king; becomes rich & powerful, but also becomes unfaithful to the Lord • Rehoboam– Solomon’s son who succeeds him as king; unwise decisions lead to division into 2 kingdoms • Jereboam– Leads rebellion against Rehoboam; establishes Northern Kingdom (Israel) consisting of 10 tribes • Ahab – One of Israel’s worst kings • Jezebel – Wife of Ahab & a Baal-worshiper • Elijah – Opposes Ahab & Jezebel b/c of their wickedness
