What is the place of digital media in our lives? • LEARNING TARGETS: • Students will learn basic statistics about the current digital landscape • Students will be able to explore the role that media plays in their lives • Students will reflect on the positive and negative impact digital media will have on their lives and society

Got Media smarts? • Take Got Media Smarts quiz • Discuss results with a partner • Which one or two answers surprised you the most? • Which one of the two statistics most closely reflect how you use digital media in your own life? • Which are the farthest from your own personal experience? • Class discussion

My digital life similes • Example: • "She dealt with moral problems as a cleaver deals with meat."(James Joyce, "The Boarding House") • What is a simile? • A simile is a figure of speech in which two fundamentally unlike things are explicitly compared, usually in a phrase introduced by like or as.

Reflect with your partner on the following questions: • How big of a role does digital media (Internet, texting, video games) play in your life (a little, some, a lot?) • What are your favorite and least-favorite things to do with digital media? • Do you connect with others or create things with digital media? • What are the positives and not-so-positive aspects of having digital media in your life?
