You will need to understand Prime Factors. View the Prime Factors slideshow before preceding if necessary. HCF and LCM The Highest Common Factor is the highest number that is a factor of both/all of the numbers given in the question. The Lowest Common Multiple is the lowest number that is a multiple of both/all of the numbers given in the question.
HCF and LCM 36 182 24 122 Example question: What is the HCF and LCM of 24 and 36? You need to find 24 and 36 as products of their prime factors: 9 2 6 2 33 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 = 36 32 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 24
HCF and LCM • Next you need to put your prime factors into a Venn diagram: • 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 = 36 • 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 24 24 36
HCF and LCM • Find all numbers that appear in both equations, i.e. both equations share two 2’s and a 3. These go in the overlapping part of the circle. Any remaining numbers in the equations go into the relevant circle: • 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 24 • 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 = 36 24 36 2 3 2 2 3
HCF and LCM • To find the HCF, multiply all the numbers that appear in the overlapping area: • To find the LCM, multiple all the numbers that appear in the whole Venn diagram: 2 x 2 x 3 = 12 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 = 120 24 36 2 3 2 2 3
