Natural Resources • IsanythingfromtheEarththatpeople use in meetingtheirneedsforfood, clothing, and shelter. • Examples of theseresourcesincludesoil, water, minerals, and vegetation.
RawMaterials • People use someresourcesjustthewaythey come fromnature. Waterisoneexample. • Butmostresoucesmustbechanged in somewaytomakesomethinguseful. Theseresources are calledrawmaterials. • Theymustbeprocessedtomakethemintousefulmaterialssuch as paper and lumber.
ThreeKinds of Resources • Geographers divide theEarth’s natural resourcesintothreegroups.
1.- RecycableResources • Water, nitrogen, and carbon are examples of recycableresources. • Theseresourcesrecyclethroughourenvironmentnaturally. Thewatercycle, forinstance, naturallyrecyclesourfreshwatersupply.
2.- RenewableResources • Trees and other living thingsontheEarth. • Theseresources are differentfromrecycableresourcesbecausethey can bereplaced. Example: A timbercompanymayharvestallthetrees in anarea. Ifthecompanyplants new treestoreplacethem, however, they are renewingtheresource.
InterestingFact Didyouknowtrees couldgetthisbig? Thisis a giant sequoia.
3.- NonrenewableResources • Whentheseresources are used up, theycannotbereplaced. -Most non living things, such as minerals, coal, natural gas, and petroleum, are non renewableresources.
AncientEnergy: FossilFuels • Fossilfuelswerecreatedovermillions of yearsfromtheremains of prehistoricplants and animals. • Thesefuels are no longerbeingcreated. As a result, fossilfuels are non renewableresources.
EnergyResources • Everyone in theworldneedsenergy. Certainareas are rich in someenergyresources, whileothershaveveryfew. • CountrieslikeSaudi Arabia and Mexicohavehugeamounts of oil. • Otherslikethe U.S.A. and China, havecoal and natural gas. • CountrieswithmanyriverslikenorthwesternEurope, can use waterenergytocreateelectricity. Otherssuch as Japan, haveveryfewenergysources.
Section 2 Assessment 1.- Define thefollowingwords: natural resources, rawmaterials, recycableresources, renewableresource, nonrenewableresource, fossilfuels 2.- What are thedifferenttypes of natural resource? 3.- Investigate: Whatfactorshavemadeenergyscarce?
