SISS secondary curriculum Framework for implementation
Keyphases of study Middle Years – Years 5-8 (key stage 3) • National Curriculum framework for English, maths and science (released summer 2008) • Synthesis of British QCA and Hesse curriculum guidelines for foundation subjects. • Extension of IPC processes • Cross curricular projects IGCSE preparation – Years 9-10 (key stage 4) • two year syllabus to be followed in subject areas. IB diploma years - Years 11-12
Benefits of following the key stage 3 core curriculum (English, maths and science): • Continuity and natural progression. • Clearly defined ‘strands’ of study that are revisited. • Differentiation linked to learning objectives and course book materials. • Inclusion of ‘real life’ functional skills and application of these to problem solving. • Natural flow into IGCSE requirements / checkpoints available. • Applicable to wider curriculum themes / projects .
Wider curriculum structures: • Key skills/concepts in geography and history prominent and similar in British and German programmes. • Criteria for selection of humanities topics to include: -balance of skills and concepts -relevance and accessibility -age related themes • IPC personal and international learning goals to be maintained. (To be applied to project days/weeks). • Ecological and global ‘issues’ to underpin project themes. • Art and design to sometimes be linked the above. QCA recommendations to be followed.
WhatIGCSE has to offer • Curriculum support and training for teachers. • A range of specialist subjects and also increasingly ‘global’ exam subjects . • Recognition of equivalence by German states and countries worldwide. • Some assessment of IPC/IB processes.
Deployment of teaching staff • Specialist international teachers to work across year groups. • Cross curricular teams to liaise on projects and application of knowledge. • Sharing of teacher specialists across campus. • Teaching assistants to be allocated to subject departments.
