  2. What to expect…. • Speaking…..talk, talk, talk, and talk some more, with partners, in groups, in presentations, on the phone • Listening……music, news, advertisements, movie clips, TV, native speakers • Writing……incorporating more grammatical structures

  3. What to expect……. • Reading…..lyrics, recipes, poetry, travel guides, news, authentic texts, and at least 2 novels • CULTURE…..music, history, art, geography, poetry, dance, travel, fashion, food, nature, animals, sports

  4. What is needed in class…. • Notebook or folder • Pens or pencils • Flashdrive/Thumbdrive • MOST IMPORTANT: A Positive Attitude • Without a “can-do”, “will try” attitude, success in this class will be exceptionally difficult. Rethink your decision to take Spanish III if you are missing this most critical component! • Curriculum is based on Exprésate 2 and 3, textbook is kept in class • Donations of Kleenex boxes and antibacterial hand cleanser would be greatly appreciated

  5. Remind.com: Periodically I might send out a reminder to students of an upcoming event, assignment, etc…. Parents are welcome to be included in the message. To do so go to remind.com, enter the code: 7c0ca, and leave either your cell number or email address (whichever is your preferred means of communication)

  6. SMARTphones If your child has a SMARTphone he or she will be using it periodically in class during instruction. A more detailed permission form will be distributed the first day that outlines programs we might use in class. You may decide if there are any programs you do not want your child to use. SMARTphones are not required and will not impact their success in class.

Grades…POINT SYSTEM • Interpretive and Interpersonal Communication (daily) Informally assessed everyday and formally assessed weekly • Homework (minimal) includes non-traditional assignments • Formal Assessments: PBT (Performance Based Task) or IPA (Integrated Task Performance) • Participation: IT IS REQUIRED • All lessons are located on el mundo de birch

  12. Students become eligible for the National Spanish Honor Society as sophomores in Spanish III. • Students must maintain a 3.4 grade point average through Spanish II and the first semester of Spanish III. • Students must have an overall academic average of 3.2.

  15. Why Study Spanish? Give yourself a competitive edge! Did you know that studying a second language can improve your skills and grades in math and English and can improve entrance exam scores -- SATs, ACTs, GREs, MCATs, and LSATs? Research has shown that math and verbal SAT scores climb higher with each additional yearofforeign language study, which means that the longer you study a foreign language, the stronger your skills become to succeed in school. The job advantage in a global economy! More and more businesses work closely with companies in other countries. They need many different kinds of workers who can communicate in different languages and understand other cultures. No matter what career you choose, if you've learned a second language, you'll have a real advantage.

Studying a new language, reading other people's stories, and connecting with people in their own language can be a source of pleasure and surprise. Connect with other cultures. Learning about other cultures will help you expand your personal Horizons and become a responsible citizen. National Security Language Initiative (NSLI) The NSLI is an inter-agency effort coordinated by the White House to dramatically increase the number of Americans learning, speaking, and teaching critical need foreign languages. Foreign language skills are essential to engaging foreign governments and peoples, especially in critical world regions, to promote understanding, convey respect for other cultures, and encourage reform. These skills are also fundamental to the economic competitiveness and security interests of the nation.
