PHP Job Change A quick reference on how to change to a new job on the PHP cutting machine.
The Die Platform • Begin by moving the die platform underneath the die. • Unscrew the die and its metal backing from the machine. • Carefully let it rest on the platform. • Unscrew the die itself from the backing. • Keep the screws – they will be needed again soon.
Attaching the New Die • Place the backing back on the storage rack, and place the die in it’s correct storage spot. • Locate the die and backing for the next job. • Screw the new die into the backing. • Move the platform underneath the machine again, and connect the die and its backing to the machine using the screws.
Establishing the New Job • Move the platform out of the way and place a protective board under the die itself. • Check the proof sheet to determine the measurements of the new job. Find the appropriate recipe in the die cutter’s computer console, and confirm the job switch.
Calibration Samples • Place one sheet of the sample stock onto the cutting board, to be used as a test sheet. • On top of that, place a registration sheet with only the outline of the blanks. This is to ensure the die comes down in exactly the right place. • Move the paper clamps to the appropriate measure for the new job.
The Die Height • With the protective board in place, bring the die down to check its contact height. • Calibrate the height by spinning the die height wheel on top of the die cutter clockwise or counterclockwise. • One full rotation is .1 of an inch, while a notch on the wheel represents .01.
Fine-Tune the Height • Once the die is closer to the correct height, run the cutting program. As the program runs, fine-tune the original height adjustment based off the impacts you see on the cutting board. • The program can be stopped at any point and returned to its base position by using the stop pedal below the machine. When the machine is restarted, it will resume from the same point it left off.
Check for Quality • Once the die’s impact height is properly calibrated, check the two sheets that are on the press. Check for clean edges around both the top sheet blanks, the sample blanks underneath, and, of course, proper registration for both. • If everything checks out, the cutting of the job can begin as intended. Keep a sharp eye out for any changes as the job is cut.
