  1. First To TimothyA.D. 62-63 (1 Timothy 1:1-2) Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. (RSV)

  2. Paul’s Relationship To Timothy • (Philippians 2:19-24) I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I may be cheered by news of you. I have no one like him, who will be genuinely anxious for your welfare. They all look after their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But Timothy's worth you know, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me; and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself shall come also. (RSV)

  3. Timothy, The Young Evangelist • (2 Timothy 1:5) I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you. (RSV) • (2 Timothy 3:14-15) But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (RSV) • (2 Timothy 4:2) preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. (RSV)

  4. Messages In 1st Timothy • Warnings Against Departures From The Faith. (1 Timothy 1:3,4; 4:1; 6:3-5) • Proper Behavior In The House Of God. (3:15; 2:1-8; 9-15) • How To Save Ourselves And Those Who Hear Us. (4:16)

  5. Key Verses • (1 Timothy 3:15-16) if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of our religion: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. (RSV)

  6. Key Verses • (1 Timothy 6:11-12) But as for you, man of God, shun all this; aim at righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. (RSV)

  7. 1 Timothy Chapter 1 Outline • Greetings From Paul (Vs. 1-2) • Warnings Against False Teachings (Vs. 3-11) • Paul’s Gratitude For God’s Mercy (Vs. 12-17) • Timothy’s Responsibility (Vs. 18-20)

  8. Two Kinds Of Teaching • (1 Timothy 1:3-7) As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies which promote speculations rather than the divine training that is in faith; whereas the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith. Certain persons by swerving from these have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions. (RSV)

  9. The Right Kind Of Teaching • Seeks to Produce love • Seeks to create a pure heart • Seeks to develop a good conscience • Seeks to produce a sincere faith

  10. Sources • The Open Bible – Background on 1 Timothy • Truth Commentary on 1st Timothy by Marshall Patton • Outline from 1st Timothy by Mark Copeland • Conduct In The Church by Thomas Holland
