Aspects of Negro Life: From Slavery Through Reconstruction • These paintings were used to tell the story of how Africans were brought to America through the slave trade and struggled for their freedom. • Critics Review: The critics liked the painting for what it meant but the style was the one thing they did not like.
Play da Blues • This painting was to describe and show jazz music and what it meant to people. • Critics Reviews: The critics did not like the unique style of this painting because it mixed Egyptian and Negro styles.
Self Portrait • For his self portrait, Douglas uses a dramatically different style from his other paintings. • Critics Review: They liked how he made his self portrait in a completely different style from his other paintings.
