Seat BeltsHow They Help You…. • Keep you from being thrown from the car in a collision • Slows your body down with your car • Keeps you from sliding on the seat during sudden stops and turns Fact: When the vehicle stops, the body keeps going at the same speed the vehicle was moving. Example: 30MPH=Falling from a 3 story building.

  4. CHILD RESTRAINTSCAR SEATS • 18 months of age = APPROVED CAR SEAT!!!! • Over 18 Months and Under 5 = CAR SEAT!!!! • Not Enough Seat Belts?= Unbelted Child Must Sit in REAR of Car.

  5. Failure to comply with the law… • Results in a PRIMARY penalty of 54$ dollar fine and court cost.

  6. Air Bag Quick Facts: • 1. Inflate @ speeds of up to 200 mph involved in a front-end collision. • Could seriously injure or kill children who are sitting in the front seat.

Air Bag Locations • DRIVER SIDE AIRBAGS FOUND IN THE STEERING WHEEL • PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAGS ON THE DASHBOARD IN FRONT OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT • SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS ON THE SIDE OF THE PASSENGER SEATS IN THE DOOR JAMBS SOME CARS NOW HAVE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS TO PROTECT REAR SEAT PASSENGERS

  12. Stopping Stopping Distances Depends On: • Motorist reaction time • Weather and visibility conditions • Vehicle weight • Brake conditions • Conditions and type of tires • Roadway conditions • Speed Fact: The faster a vehicle is going, the longer it will take it to stop.

  13. The most common mistake.. • New Motorist make the common mistake of slamming the brake pedal, even if there is no emergency.

  14. At 50 mph, what is reaction distance • 55 feet • Braking distance 192 ft • Total distance is 247 feet

  15. Speed control • Start – slowly • Increase- gradually • Slow down- smoothly

  16. HAND SIGNALS

  17. When would you use these hand signals??? • When your signals go out.

  18. Reverse Driving • 1. Check for clear path • 2. Use proper hand positioning • 3. Let off the brake pedal slowly (go 2mph) • 2. Turning the wheel to the right will direct the vehicle to the right. • 3. Turning the wheel to the left will direct the vehicle to the left. • 4. Not turning the wheel, vehicle will move straight back. Remember: The Front of the vehicle will be swinging in the opposite direction. *You will be asked to demonstrate going in reverse 100ft in a straight line AT THE ROAD TEST!!!!!

  19. Turning Guidelines • 1. Know in advance where you are turning. • 2. Use mirrors to check if it is clear= Pedestrians, other vehicles • 3. Signal 100 ftbefore turning. • 4. Slow down 100 or more ft before reaching your turn. • 5. Keep steady speed, follow pavement markings • 6. Stay in same lane • 7. Turn signal OFF when turn is complete.

  20. Hand Over Hand Method • Best way to maintain control of the vehicle while turning.

  22. Parking • How many inches should you park from the curb??? 6 inches or less

ParkingOn a Hill • A- When parking a vehicle facing downhill • Turn Tires towards the curb • Emergency Brake ON!!! • B- When parking a vehicle facing uphill • Turn Tires away from Curb • Emergency Brake ON!! • C- Downhill with out curb • Turn Tires Towards Grass • Emergency Brake ON!!!! FACT: A question regarding parking on a hill WILL be on the WRITTEN EXAM!!!

  24. Parallel Parking Cues • 1. Find a parking space large enough for vehicle • 2. Pull up Parallel to vehicle in front (2-4 ft) • 3. Signal Towards your space • 4. Behind Vehicle is clear? • 5. Slowly Release the foot off brake, At the same time turn wheel all the way to the right. • 6. Stop when your passenger door and car bumper are even. • 7. Slowly Release foot off brake, while turning wheel all the way to the left. • 8.
