Impacts of CA/N • Mental health problems • internalizing (depression, anxiety, etc) • externalizing (aggression, behavior problems, criminal involvement) • Increased impulsivity • Low self esteem • Social Skills impairments/ poor relationships • Delayed or stunted growth • Cognitive delays • Language impairment • Academic problems • Social Isolation • Alcohol/drug abuse • Chronic illness/ medical problems

  5. Undernutrition • Caloric or protein deficiency • Imbalance between what the body needs and what it gets (malnutrition) • Serious weight loss or lack of expected gain • General rule • birth weight doubles at 4 months • triples by 1 year

  6. Failure to Thrive • Must be diagnosed by a medical professional • Based on failure to attain growth and developmental milestones over time • May have organic or social causes, or both • Possibility of irreversible damage • Medical monitoring is required
