Prevalence • 101,000+ reported incidents of domestic violence. • 1 in 3 common assaults • 1 in 4 Actual Bodily Harm (ABH) • 1 in 8 Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) • 10% of all homicide in London • 20% of all violent crime in London • 75% of all children on the Social Services‘at risk’ register
Honour Based Violence definition ‘So-called honour based violence’ is a crime or incident, which has or may have been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family and/or community. Metropolitan Police March 2007
Graph 3 - Victim Age Victims between the ages of 16 and 20 reported the highest number of Forced Marriage incidents - most at risk. 1 in 4 victims are Under 18 – Child protection issues
The development of the Public Protection Command Assists the effective management of: • Dangerous People • Dangerous Places, and • Vulnerable Victims – adults and children
Strategic Drivers • HMIC Areas for Improvement (AFIs) • High Profile/well publicised homicides & other Critical • Incidents • Legislative Changes e.g. Children Act 2004 (ECM) • Organisational Drivers e.g. Management Board, • Strategic partners (MPA et al), Serious Violence Strategy etc.
The key aims of the future model are: ·Rationalise and improve communication routes and intelligence flows between PP units & stakeholders. ·Facilitate improvement & formalisation of cross team intelligence and info sharing. • Reduce potential for intelligence to get “lost” • Increase cross-crime type offender identification • Facilitate joined-up reactive/proactive response
Aims cont’d ….. • Increase the size of taskable resources to public protection offences • Raised profile of PP unit, will promote greater intelligence support from BIUs & MIB • Increased flexibility of resource deployment to meet changing priorities • Increased opportunity for proactive response by BOCU resources • Scaleable structure to support possible future growth
