Visitor Services Program • Ensure our visitor to Nanaimo receives the best possible experience we can provide • Ensure that our visitors make an economic impact on our community • 2006 Visitors and Inquiries 87,716 • 2007 Aug to date 71,778 (2.4% increase) • Total Annual Investment in Visitor Services Program is $142,700 • Provide a mobile event kiosk service
Official Nanaimo Visitor’s Guide • 115,000 copies printed annually • Distributed province wide & within selected target markets • Including BC Ferries and Provincial Visitor Centres • Online version is a new feature
BC Ferries Kiosk Service • 2007 was our 4th year – started in 2004 • Over 24,000 people served in Summer 2007 • Over 14,000 people served in Summer 2006 • Starts in June, ends September long weekend • Friday through Monday, four sailings daily on two vessels from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay • This season saw the start of the Go Island guide – a program specific guide designed with the ferry traffic in mind • 2008 will bring the new “C” Class vessels with permanent onboard space for kiosks
Community and Industry Liaison • Value of Tourism to the residents and economy of Nanaimo • Community liaison – EDG, Chamber of Commerce, Team Nanaimo – 2010 Spirit Committee, and others • Liaison to external co-op marketing opportunities through Destination Nanaimo • Tourism Nanaimo serves as the Call-to-Action on all Destination Nanaimo external advertising campaign 1-800’s • Convention servicing – assist with development of pre- and post- convention itineraries; convention kiosks • Cruise ship kiosk program – provide kiosk and information services to the 15,000 cruise ship passengers
Industry Education Services • Industry topic workshops • Long-stay program – assist in the development of long-stay programs through workshops and education • Come Play Day – to encourage all Front-Line Staff to become more familiar with our tourism product
Community Marketing • Come Ashore – annual boaters program • Restaurant Guide – only guide to list ALL of Nanaimo’s restaurants • Go Island Guide – only program available designed exclusively for the Ferry Kiosk Program • Shopping Festival – community and external marketing strategy in partnership with Destination Nanaimo
Website Development • Complete Re-Development of www.tourismnanaimo.com – call to action website for all Destination Nanaimo external marketing initiatives • Calendar of events • Member listings • Itinerary development • Member program tracking • Enhanced listings program • Online guides – Visitor Guide, Restaurant Guide • Resident, Visitor, Media, Conventions & Tournaments sections – all developed with input from community partners
Focus for 2008 and Beyond • Strategic planning continues for 2008-2012 • Move to Downtown Nanaimo location • Plan and Operation of permanent kiosk locations around the city • Work with community partners to develop Nanaimo as a destination
