  1. 有所尝试,就会有所作为。 • Something attempted, something done. --朗费罗(Henry Longfellow)

  2. Lesson Seven • Books and TV

  3. Look at the picture on page 45 of the textbook.and answer the questions below it. • Study the useful words & phrases: grave (tomb) to mourn…in silent tribute coffin to attend the funeral cross to wear black gauzes wreath to produce a eulogy on the dead

  4. Group discussion • Divide the class into several groups numbering 4 or 6 students in each. The groups have a discussion about the question, below and then send representatives to air their views. • The question is:Can books be replaced by TV? ( the advantage and disadvantage of books and TV) (reference seen P53)

  5. About books • 1) There are a great varieties of books, covering a large range of subjects. • 2) A good book is the sum of all wisdom, a kind of treasure, and can be handed down from generation to generation. • 3) Books give us food for thinking. • 4) Although books can’t provide us with the up-to-date news, yet from the books we can learn lessons from the past.

  6. About TV • TV programs are more appealing with sound, motion and pictures. • TV programs help us to keep track of the current political & economical affairs and the latest scientific & technological progresses.. • We can relax ourselves by watching colorful TV programs. • But TV viewers are usually passive recipients.

  7. Good sentences and expressions: • 1. As I see it, books provide more profound knowledge than TV programs. • 2. But I believe TV is the thing that really gives us the picture of what the world is like currently. • 3.But for books human beings could never have inherited the wisdom and legacy passed over by our ancestors, thus we could never have progressed so quickly. • 4. I wonder if you could by any chance rely on the book knowledge too much so that you ignore what is happening around us now? • 5. Could I possibly ask you to show me an example that TV programs help students to learn? In my mind, while you are watching TV, all you have to do is to sit back and receive everything that is shown there. You don’t really do any thinking or reacting, do you? • 6. Come to think of it, you’re probably right. But isn’t it possible that you are reading yet without thinking and reacting? • 7. If I were you , I would get a more balanced view of the two. As a student, I regard books as an indispensable part of my life and will do what I can to make the best use of all those good books . However, I need TV to enrich my life all the same, especially at weekends and during the vacations.
