  2. Pres. Obama’s Response to Critics of his Economic PoliciesPress Conference, February 2009 “Some of the criticisms [of my proposals] really are with the basic idea that government should intervene at all in this moment of crisis. You have some people, very sincere, who philosophically just think the government has no business interfering in the marketplace. And in fact there are several who have suggested that FDR was wrong to intervene back in the New Deal. They're fighting battles that I thought were resolved a pretty long time ago….” “Now, maybe philosophically you just don't think that the federal government should be involved [in the economy]…. I happen to disagree with that.”

  3. Books on Obama& thespectre of socialism • To Save America: Stopping • Obama's Secular-Socialist Machine • Newt Gingrich • Revolt!: How to Defeat Obama • and Repeal His Socialist Programs • Dick Morris and Eileen Mcgann • Radical-in-Chief: Barack Obama • and the Untold Story of American Socialism • Stanley Kurtz

  4. “The reason President Obama and some Republicans can get behind socialized medicine is because they share the same core political philosophy about the purpose of government.... We can’t preserve liberty if the choice is between a frugal socialist and an out-of-control socialist.” Michelle Bachmann Nov 6, 2011

  5. THE INVISIBLE WELFARE STATE Student comments on answers to a survey about capitalism, socialism, and the welfare state • “Each of the respondents had…difficulty expressing their concept of the welfare state and even expressed difficulty with grasping exactly what a welfare state is.” • “Everyone knew what capitalism is because we live in a capitalist society, but people were unsure what a welfare state is.”

  6. The key Question: • Which sectors should be marketized and which should be socialized? Two uncontroversial socialized sectors Police Protection K-12 Education • What other goods and services should citizens have access to independently of ability to pay?

  7. Michelle Bachman, Nov. 3, 2011 “Food stamps, the Department of Education, the automobile task force, the government takeover of housing, health care and student loan industries are all examples of the federal government doing what the constitution did not explicitly enumerate.Government will have to diminish so that you have the power and chance to succeed and grow and so that free markets can once again be free.”

  8. Three Core Values for Evaluating The Justice of Economic Systems

  9. The Three Values & the Occupy MovementMaximize Well-being: How can political leaders claim to promote the general welfare when the top 1% possess an excessive share of wealth and income? Wanted: a distribution of wealth and income that effectively promotes the general welfare, not the welfare of the few?Rewarding desert: How can well-off people deserve their success if the playing field is skewed in their favor and other people lack the resources to compete effectively and want work but cannot find jobs?Wanted: education, training, and job opportunities.Liberty:Do most citizens have real political liberty if wealthy people control the political system and use it to create laws that favor them and ignore the interests of most people? Wanted: a fair, democratic system of government that represents the interest of all people.
