French population remained small because only small groups of traders were sent to the Americas. • Key People: Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec in 1608. René-Robert La Salle claimed the Mississippi river for France. • Daily Life: The French colonist did not enslave Native Americans rather they regularly interacted with them (peacefully). • Benefits of colony:The area was rich with fish and furs that were used in trade. • Impact : The French and Indian war; resulted in a high amount of deaths and gave England a high amount of land as well as debt. Today many people in Canada speak French. • Important Concepts :French traders got a majority of their furs from the Native Americans often becoming allies. Some traders even married Native American women intermingling the two cultures.
