The Battle For Truth Is Age Old • Genesis 3.1-7: “Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast … he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden '?" … 4 The serpent said to the woman, "You surely will not die! 5 "For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” • Who was telling the truth, was at the heart of the moment …

  3. The “Belt Of Truth” Still Needed • Ephesians 6.11-14 “Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places …14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH …”

  4. 1st, Truth is an attribute of God • Exodus 34:6 ‘Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth’ • Hebrews 6.18 “so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.”

Hebrew: truth (emet & amen) • “True” means more than conceptual truth • Hebrew: truth = “faithful”, “reliable” (emet) • Cousin = “amen” (faithful or reliable) • Idea: your faith is only as good as the object in which you place your faith in • God is faithful & reliable (emet) – worthy of our trust; a “true” person • Equally, a person’s word is only as good as their person is

  6. 2nd, Truth became incarnate - Christ • John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” • John 14:6 ‘Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”’ • Truth is continued to be found in a person … God incarnated

Jesus: Faithful & True Revelation 19:11 “And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.” • As you trust Christ, you trust someone who: • Is a “true person”, not a deceiver or tricky • Laid down His life for you • Cannot lie • In a world of deception & false advertising, Jesus is a real & “true” person

  8. 3rd, God’s Word is Truth • Because God is true, His Words are true • John 17:17 "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth”, Jesus • Framing of our perceptions with God’s Word = framing our lives with an eternally true perspective (not just temporary) • God’s Words are faithful & true, but they are also spiritual • Inseparable relationship between the Word of truth & the Spirit of truth

  9. 4th, Truth Is Verifiable (Jewish Law) • John 8.17-18 "Even in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true1. 18 "I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.“ (1Deuteronomy 19.15) • John 15:26 "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me …”

God witnesses to & verifies Christ John 14:16-17 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” John 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

  11. 5th, Evangelism: why we listen or not 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 “in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.“ Ephesians 2:2 “… you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh …”

John 8:42-44 ‘42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. 43 "Why do you not understand what I am saying?It is because you cannot hear My word. 44 "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him.Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.‘

  13. 5th, Evangelism: why we listen or not • Listening & Hearing Is Not Just Intellectual But It Is Spiritual • Why People Listen To The Gospel Or Not: • The (spiritual) condition of their heart • The spirit/Spirit they’re listening to • Praying For The Lost Is Important Because “Hearing” Is A Spiritual Battle / Contest • Prayer & Evangelism Always Go Together Because “Hearing” Is Spiritual

  14. 6th, We Are Born by the Word of truth Ephesians 1.13-14: “In Him, you also, after listening to the message (word) of truth, the gospel of your salvation-- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.” James 1:18 “In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.”

  15. 7th, God wants us to be faithful & true • John 4:23-24 "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." • Psalm 51:6 “Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.”

  16. True disciples = goal of God’s truth • John 8:31-32 31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." • 3 John 1:4 “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.” • John’s greatest joy was to hear that believers were “walking the talk” & “living the Life”

  17. Putting on a new (truthful) man Ephesians 4:21-25 “… just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”

  18. Problem: Human Heart Is Deceitful Jeremiah 17:9-10 "The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” 10 "I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.” • Condition of our heart: “deceitful” & “sick” (“deceitful” = “yacov”, Genesis 32.24) • Part of each one of us needs to “wrestle with God” to become “true”

  19. Needing God in the inward parts • Psalm 51:5-13 “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. 6 Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom. 7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.

  20. Create truth in the “inward parts” 9 Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast (true) spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.”
