Create a flash card for each word. • Animated – Full of life, energetic • Alliance – Union of people working toward a common goal • Controversial – Causing public disagreement • Mortify – To cause extreme embarrassment • Wayward – Disobedient, rebellious Parents were angry and animated that the controversialalliance of wayward bullies should not be allowed to remain in tact, since they mortified so many students.

Create a flash card for each word. • Consolidate – Combine many things into one single thing • Dominate – To control completely • Potential - Possible • Tactful – Showing sensitivity in dealing with people • Uncertainty – Unknown, having doubt I tactfullyconsolidated all the students who were potential distractions to the class into one group in the back corner of the room because, otherwise, they would dominate the class with no uncertainty.

Create a flash card for each word. • Incredulous- unbelieving • Vague- nonspecific • Gallantly- heroically • Aloofness-emotionally distant • Ornery- bad tempered My story about gallantly saving the cat was so vague that my mom was incredulous, so I just became ornery and sat in a state of aloofness when she tried to talk to me.

Create a flash card for each word. • Skeptical-having doubts • Divert- cause a change of direction • Judicious-showing good sense • Liable- responsible for • Nonchalant-casually calm I tried to divert our road trip because I was skeptical of the route, despite my friends being nonchalant, and it turns out, it was a judicious decision that I was liable for.

Create a flash card for each word. • Dynamic- full of activity, change and/or energy • Eradicate-put an end to • Marginal- on the edge or margin of something • Prominent- Stands out • Reluctant- holds back I was looking at the dynamic speaker and wanted him to eradicate some of the generic things he was saying because the prominent things he spoke on did not help the more marginal people in society, so I am reluctant to go back.

Create a flash card for each word. • Downtrodden – Treated badly by people in power • Entice - Tempt • Melancholy - Sad • Ratify – Approve something to make it official • Stifle – Hold back The downtrodden villagers were melancholy because their attempt to get a new bill ratified that would give them more freedom was stifled by a government enticed by holding all the power.

Create a flash card for each word. • Bystander – A person who is near, but not participating • Erode – Slowly wear away • Flounder – Struggle clumsily • Persist – Continue even though something is difficult • Vital – Absolutely necessary The woman who fell in the river knew it was vital that she persist until she reached the shore; so she saved herself, with no help from the bystander who didn’t help because his confidence had eroded and he knew he would flounder.

Create a flash card for each word. • Dilapidated – Worn down • Grueling – Extremely tiring or demanding • Hospitable – Friendly and welcoming • Lavish – Extravagant and luxurious • Notorious – Famous for a bad reason After a grueling escape from prison, the notorious criminal planned on sleeping in a lavish hotel where he remembered that the people were hospitable, but it had gone out of business and was now dilapidated.

Group 17 • Conscience – Part of the mind that makes you aware of what is right or wrong. • Bleak – Hopeless, depressing • Martyr – A person who suffers, or is killed, for religious or other beliefs. • Declaration – A formal announcement • Liberated – Set free The martyr had a clear conscience because she knew she had done the right thing, even though her future was bleak because there was a declaration stating that she would not be liberated.

After I perused my own frivolous writing, I had no qualmsabout bolstering my essay so others could sustain interest while reading it.

Create a flash card for each word. • Invalidate- make invalid (not worth anything) • Oblique- slanting • Glut- a lot of something • Venerate- look at with great respect • Wanton- deliberate violent action My dog had an oblique stance causing the judges to invalidate him since they had a glut of dogs that they venerate, but it made me want to pursue wanton vandalism against the show!
