Prostitution • Prostitution in itself is illegal • Minors are automatically considered trafficked • They aren’t mentally capable of making the decision to prostitute themselves • Adults require evidence of coercion • Aren’t willing to cooperate • Language barrier • Mental/physical/emotional control over victim
“The Game” • “The Game” = life or act of pimping • “Daddy” = pimp • “Madam” = female pimp • “B*tch” “Ho” = prostitute(used by both pimp and prostitute) • “B*tch” -acronym for “Beautiful Intelligent Too Cute to Handle” • “Carpet-Ho” = works casinos • “Street Walker” = works the streets • “Stable” “Family” “Team” = a pimp’s group of prostitutes • “Out of Pocket” = when a prostitute breaks a pimp’s rule she’s said to be out of pocket. All teen prostitutes know this term.
“The Game” • “Bottom Girl” = top girl in the stable, but is victim of manipulation and mind games often worse than regular prostitutes. She’ll discipline/beat other prostitutes. But if she goes out of pocket she’ll get the worst beating of all. • “Folks” = pimps • “Break a B*tch” = when a “pimp circle” (group of pimps) circle a prostitute and hurl insults to humiliate a prostitute. • If a prostitute makes eye contact with another pimp the new pimp gets all the money she has on her and she then belongs to that pimp. The new pimp “Serves Up” the old pimp by notifying him of the new arrangement and how much money it will cost the old pimp to buy back his prostitute.
“The Game” • “Pimps Up, Hos Down” = pimps are on the sidewalk, prostitutes have to be on the streets and are not allowed on the sidewalk. If a prostitute walks on the sidewalk she’s “out of pocket.” • “Circuit” = tracks/cities through which pimps transport prostitute • “Choose/Choose Up” = when a prostitute picks a pimp • “Choosy Suzy” = a prostitute that jumps from pimp to pimp • “Pimp Brand/Tramp Stamp” = a tattoo identifying what pimp that prostitute belongs to • “Renegade” = working without a pimp, not common, usually older prostitutes/drug addicts • “Square” = those trying to get someone out of the game, e.g. social workers, police
Sex Tourism • The World Tourism Organization, a special agency of the United Nations, defines sex tourism as • “Trips organized from within the tourism sector, or from outside this sector but using its structures and networks, with the primary purpose of effecting a commercial sexual relationship by the tourist with residents at the destination” • Summarize • Trips or vacations for sexual purposes • Politicians • Businessmen • Places where sex tourism is rampant • Morocco, Cambodia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, the Netherlands (particularly Amsterdam), Kenya, the Philippines, Colombia, Thailand, Cuba, and Indonesia (particularly Bali), Dubai
Warning Signs • ANYONE CAN BECOME A VICTIM • Poverty stricken • Limited educational background • Single parents • Poor economic conditions (war, repression, economy) • Desire to improve their income or the incomes of their family • Youth with history of familiar abuse, foster care, child protective services • Lack of opportunities in home country • Devastation caused by conflict or natural disasters in home country • Homeless, runaway, or throwaway youth • Desire to join family members or friends • Migration as a strategy for upward mobility • The rich
Statistics • Human trafficking generates $9.5 billion yearly in the United States. (United Nations) • Approximately 300,000 children are at risk of being prostituted in the United States. (U.S. Department of Justice) • The average age of entry into prostitution for a child victim in the United States is 13-14 years old. (U.S. Department of Justice) • A pimp can make $150,000-$200,000 per child each year and the average pimp has 4 to 6 girls. (U.S. Justice Department, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) • The average victim may be forced to have sex up to 20-48 times a day. (Polaris Project) • Fewer than 100 beds are available in the United States for underage victims. (Health and Human Services) • Department Of Justice has identified the top twenty human trafficking jurisdictions in the country:” Houston, El Paso, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte, Miami, Las Vegas, New York, Long Island, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Phoenix, Richmond, San Diego, San Francisco, St Louis, Seattle, Tampa (Department of Justice) • One in three teens on the street will be lured toward prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home.
