  4. Who is William Golding? • Born in 1911 • Originally wanted to be a scientist • Joined Royal Navy during World War II • Published Lord of the Flies in 1954 • Writes allegorical fiction • Writes about the fragile nature of civilization

  5. What is a microcosm? • A mini cosmos • A small world with symbolic references to people groups, political and value systems • Example: • Ranch in OMAM

  6. What does the title mean? • “Lord of the Flies” comes from the translation of a Hebrew word (Beelzebub in Greek). • Means devil, devoted to decay, destruction, demoralization, hysteria and panic

  7. Some Themes • The defects of society can be traced back to the defects of human nature. • Morals come directly from our surroundings; without civilization, we lose those values.
