  1. The History of Cell Theory How did scientist figure out that all living things are made of cells?

  2. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek 1632-1723 • 1st to use a microscope to see microscopic organisms • Called them “animalcules” • invented microscope

  3. Robert Hooke 1635-1708 • Observed cork under microscope: saw tiny chambers • Called these “Cells” • Cell: Basic unit of life; the smallest thing that is still considered “living”

  5. Mathias Schleiden,Theodor Schwann, and Rudolf Virchow • Schleiden(1814-1881): all plants are made of cells • Schwann (1810-1882): all animals are made of cells • Virchow (1821-1902): cells arise from preexisting cells

  7. Francisco Redi (1626-1698) • Disproved spontaneous generation http://facstaff.gpc.edu/~mmajor/Lec%20Outlines%201913/Redi_experiment.JPG

  8. Robert Koch’s Postulates (1843-1910) • To see if a “germ” causes a disease you must go through these steps… • Must find “germ” in all cases of the disease • Culture “germ” from patient with disease • From that culture, infect new patients and get the same disease • Culture from those patients and get the same “germ”

  9. Cell Theory • All living organisms are made of cells • Cells are basic unit of all living organisms • New cells made from preexisting cells

  10. Types of Cells • Prokaryotic • No nucleus or membrane bound organelles, • Ex: Bacteria • Eukaryotic • -- complex, have a nucleus & membrane bound organelles, • --Ex: animal, plant, fungi, protist • Organelle: specialized structures that perform a specific function
