Comparison of mechanical properties of silicone and PVC (polyvinylchloride) cosmetic gloves for articulating hand prostheses Gerwin Smit, MSc; Dick H. Plettenburg, MSc, PhD
Aim • Mechanically compare polyvinylchloride (PVC) and silicone cosmetic gloves. • Quantify stiffness of finger joints, required actuation energy, and energy dissipation during joint articulation. • Relevance • Cosmetic gloves, which cover hand prostheses, negatively affect mechanical efficiency of prostheses.
Method • Mechanically tested six cosmetic gloves: • 3 silicone. • 3 PVC.
Results • Silicone gloves • Required less work. • Dissipated less energy during flexing. • Had lower joint stiffness. • Required lower maximum joint torque.
Conclusion • Based on energy requirements, joint stiffness, and required joint torque, tested silicone glove is most suitable for application on articulating hand prosthesis.
