History • 1971- Starbucks opens first store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market • 1982- Howard Schultz joins Starbucks as director of retail operations/marketing • 1983- Howard travels to Italy where he's impressed by espresso bars • 1984- Howard convinces founders on Starbucks to test the coffeehouse concept in downtown Seattle • 1987- Starbucks opens first stores outside of Seattle into Chicago and Vancouver, B.C. • 1988- Offers full health benefits to full- and part-time employees • 1991- Becomes first privately owned U.S. company to offer a stock option program that includes part-time employees • 1995- Begins serving Frappuccino blended beverages
More History • 1997- Establishes The Starbucks Foundation, benefiting local communities • 1999- Partners with Conservation International to promote environmentally responsible methods of growing coffee • 2001- Introduces the Starbucks card • 2002- Enters into licensing agreements with national Fair Trade organizations to sell coffee in countries where Starbucks does business • 2004- Introduces Starbucks Coffee Master Program to provide Starbucks partners with the opportunity to learn more about their coffee • 2008- Announces a renewed focus on customers experience and innovation • 2009- Launches innovative VIA ready Brew coffee and becomes the world’s largest buyer of Fair Trade Certified coffee
Mission Statement “To inspire and nurture the human sprit- one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.” • Starbucks makes customers feel welcome by writing their name of their cup of coffee • Also gives back to local communities with more than 200 volunteer projects across the United States and Canada
Predictions for the future • Opening coffee shops at a rate of 3 ½ per day worldwide • Plans to have around 25,000 shops worldwide which is more than triple its 8,000 coffee shops now • Employees more than 80,000 people now and hires more than 250 people per day • Changing light fixtures in the store to be more energy efficient • Introducing a new product which are Via Instant Coffee packets, making a move into the fast growing single brewing segment • Able to get coffee on the go- instant coffee machines are being made and are in places such as malls.
