  2. Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter. • He was born on March 30th, 1853, in the Netherlands. • He had red hair and a brother named Theo.

  3. When he was 15 years old he left the school and started to work in an ART GALLERY. • In 1869, the Art Gallery sent him to work in England. • He learnt a lot about painting. But he wasn’t happy so…

  4. He return to the Netherlands, and worked as a teacher. But he wasn’t happy so…

  5. He wanted to become a PRIEST. But he wasn’t happy so…

  6. He decided to paint by himself and he went to Paris. • HE BECAME AN ARTIST.

  7. In Paris he met Paul Gaugin who introduced him to the IMPRESSIONISM. • Vincent van Gogh loved IMPRESSIONISM.

  8. IMPRESSIONISM is the use of COLOURS. Colours show emotions. • But Vincent van Gogh makes also use of the brushstroke to show movement. • Thick, short brushstroke. The Starry Night (1889)Oil on canvas.

  9. Although he was great, people did not understand him. He painted 900 pictures more or less but he only sold ONE to his brother Theo.

  10. He was sad. • He went to Arles, another town in the south of France. He painted his room. Room in Arles.

  11. One night, he cut off his ear. • He was sent to an ASYLUM a place for mental illness. • Theo, his brother, moved him to another asylum in Auvers near Paris. Theo looked after his brother Vincent.

  12. Vincent was happy and painted a lot. • Portrait of his doctor. Sunflowers.

  13. But in 1890 he committed suicide. He was only 37 years old.

  14. After his death, he became popular and famous. Asylum in Auvers. THE END.
