Linking Verbs • Linking Verb- a verb that connects the subject of a sentence with a noun or an adjective in the predicate part of sentence.
Common Linking Verbs • Be • Is, are, am • Was, were • Become • Seem • Appear • Look • Grow (in the sense of growing taller, not growing flowers) • Turn • Taste • Feel • Smell • Sound
Examples • Matt Thomas was the director. • He is a giant. • The family grows stronger in their relationship. • The flower smells great.
Predicate Noun • A noun that follows a linking verb. • It tells what the subject is. • The set designer was a carpenter. • Africa is a continent.
Predicate Adjectives • An adjective that follows a linking verb. • It describes the subject by telling what it is like. • He is kind. • Africa is scenic. • The flower smells good. • The boy seems tired. • The athlete appears tired and sore.
Be Careful Linking verb: if it connects the subject with a noun or an adjective. Action verb- if it tells what the subject does.
