  1. Transgenic Organism By: Alan Nguyen

  2. What is it? • Transgenic Organism • a.k.a. Gentically modified organism (GMO) • Any organism that has been genetically engineered to express a certain gene(s). • Recombinant DNA technology

  3. Dolly the Sheep (1996-2003) • First sheep to be successfully cloned • Engineered through somatic cell nuclear transfer • Cell nucleus of adult cell + (unfertilized oocyte – nucleus) • Electrical impulse is applied surrogate mother.

  4. Research • Dolly was cloned by Ian Wilmut& Keith Campbell at the Roslin Institute (Edinburgh, Scotland) • Roslin Institute* – enhance human & animal life • Disease resistance • Sustainability & productivity • Diseases: understanding “trans-species jump” • Enhance quality of life Ian Wilmutand Dolly the Sheep *http://www.roslin.ed.ac.uk/

  5. Where do we go from here? • Cloning is POSSIBLE! • Roslin Institute is researching cloning on bigger animals such as horses and bulls • Cloning humans? Possibly…. • Bringing back extinct species? • Pyrenean Ibex (2000) • Spix’s Macaw (2004) • West African Black Rhino (2006)

  6. Wait! What about Dolly? • Spent her entire life at the Roslin Institute. • She produced 6 lambs during her lifespan. • Euthanized on Feb. 14, 2003 due to severe arthritis and lung cancer called Jaagsiekte. • Common illness among sheep kept indoors • Scientists do not attribute her short lifespan to cloning

  7. Bibliography • Paul G Shiels, Alexander J. Keith H.S. Campbell, Ian Wilmut, David Waddington, Alan Colman, Angelika E. Schnieke. Clone.
