BBC Local London Travel News article on Hygiene in the Underground. During Autumn of 2000 a team of scientists at the Department of Forensics at University College London removed a row of seats from a Central Line Tube carriage for analysis into cleanliness. Despite London Underground’s claim that the interior of their trains are cleaned on a regular basis, the scientists made some alarming discoveries. The analysis was broken down into observations of both the surface and the inside of the seats. On the surface of the seats they found: 4 types of hair (human, rat, mouse and dog); 7 types of insect (mostly fleas, mostly alive); vomit originating from at least 9 separate people; human urine originating from at least 4 separate people; human excrement; human semen. When the seats were taken apart they found: the remains of 2 rats; the remains of 6 mice; 1 fungus (not identifiable). It was estimated that by holding one of the armrests you could transfer to yourself the natural oils and sweat from up to 400 separate people. It is thought that the majority of sick-days taken in London is considered to be directly attributable to the condition of the Underground and that you would probably be healthier if you were to smoke 5 cigarettes a day than travel regularly on the Tube.
