New Immigrants • .New Immigrants from south and east Europe, most could not speak English, many Catholic or Jewish. • Greek, Russian, Turk, Poles, Italians in this new wave. • 1907 80% of immigrants are “new” • Out west Mexican along with Asian immigration increases
The new immigrant • They did not fit into American society easily ;most lived in urban neighborhoods based on nationality or religion • many emigrated because of economic, agricultural, and social problems (ethnic persecution) • USA seen as land of opportunity
Coming to America • most Euros landed in NYC where they saw the Statue of Liberty after 1886 • NYC arrivals registered at Ellis Island; west coast arrivals registered at Angel Island San Francisco • Immigrants underwent health inspections along with questioning about relatives, occupation, religion, etc
Immigrant Experience • men hired as unskilled labor in factories, women and children worked in garment sweatshops • children assimilated faster than parents, women enjoyed new freedoms • immigrants flocked to neighborhoods where they found jobs, homes, worship, and their culture
Reaction of Americans to immigrants • labor feared immigrants would lower wages, tension arose from new religions, culture, languages • many cities and states tried to restrict immigrant housing, jobs, religion, etc.; violence often occurred
Asian Immigration • 19190-1940 50,000 Chinese enter US • Many found work on the railroads • Chinese did not fit in well because of dress and language • Labor union leaders rallied against Chinese such as Knight’s leader who ended speeches with “The Chinese must go!”
Slowing Immigration • 1882 US government passes Chinese Exclusion Actwhich will prohibit the immigration of Chinese for 10 years • US and Japan agree to limit immigrants from Japan in “gentleman’s agreement”
