Study design • Outcome • Probability of the student to be attracted by a residency in family medicine QC19: At this time, which area of specialty do you hope to enter? • Family medicine • Other specialty
Study design National Physician Survey (NPS)3: • Collaborative initiative among: CFPC, CMA, RCPSC • Financial support by: CFPC, CMA, RCPSC, CIHI, Health Canada. • Surveys (electronic & paper) conducted every 3 years
Study design • Student background • Exposure to rural environment (A5) • Parent educational status (F33) • Last academic degree at admission (A10) • Parent in health professions (F35) • Medical school • University (A11) • Exposure to medical specialties (B17) • Medical training to select a residency program (B18) Personal students’ characteristics • Demographic: • age (A1) • gender (A2) • marital status (A3) • Motivation: • for medical training (A12) • when (A13) • marital status (A3) • Interest: • interest in patient care (C20); • interest in research (C20); • interest in teaching (C20); • interest in health administration (C20); • interest in public health (C20); • Financial: • expected debt (D29c) • short residency program to pay off the debt (D29d) • specialty with high earning potential to pay off the debt (D29d) • financial situation (D31) • Satisfaction: • factors for having a satisfying practice (C23a)
Results Preclinical
Results Clinical

Conclusion • 65% of medical students are attracted by a specialty practice • Specialty with high earning potential to pay debt • Interest in research & administration
Conclusion • Profiles of students attracted by family medicine at the preclinical level of the program are similar than those at the clinical level of the program • Pay off debts • Research
