That would be head lice. Every school has cases of head lice. It has nothing to do with dirty hair (they actually like clean hair), nor does it have anything to do with how clean your house is. It happened twice to my own children and I even knew what to look for. I will give you some suggestions for checking your child’s hair and explain what to do if you find head lice. Your child may complain of itchy scalp. Live lice are very small and hard to see. To see the lice, you may need a strong light and a magnifying glass. Lice are about the size of a sesame seed. They are wingless, gray-brown, hairy, flat, six-legged insects. They are usually found at the center line of the top of the head, at the back of the neck at the hair line, and behind the ears, but they can be anywhere on the scalp. Look also for “nits” or eggs that can be found on a single hair. These are tiny tan or white specks which will stick to the hair and are hard to pull off. If you suspect your child has head lice or “nits” please let the school know. If you find live head lice or nits, you need to use an over-the-counter pediculocide now and repeat in seven days, following the package directions OR consult your healthcare provider for prescription treatment. There are several different types of lice treatments including shampoo and cream rinse. Be sure to follow the label directions exactly. Over the counter treatments must be REPEATED IN ONE WEEK- but no sooner- to kill lice that have hatched since the first treatment. Over the counter products kill lice, but will not kill eggs waiting to hatch. Remove all eggs (Nits): This is the most difficult and most important chore in getting rid of head lice. Failure to remove nits and lice will lead to failure of the treatment. To remove nits: Use a fine-toothed plastic comb that comes with the treatment or buy a more effective fine metal nit removal comb. While hair is wet, comb hair in one inch sections, pinning each section out of the way once you have completed combing it. Rinse or clean the comb after each pass through. Clean the environment: Machine wash in hot water all washable clothing, coats, book bags, towels, bed linins, and pillows that have been in contact with lice in the previous 3 days. Clothes, bedding or stuffed animals that can not be washed or dried may be dry cleaned or placed in a plastic bag and sealed airtight for two weeks. Thoroughly wash combs, brushes, hairbows, and personal articles in hot water for 20 minutes. Vacuum carpets, upholstered furniture, and mattresses. Vacuum the car seats if fabric. Remember, head lice can happen to any family. Right now we are not in an epidemic. Your quick action should lice appear will help us keep it that way. I hope this helps and I didn’t leave you scratching your head….. Bobbie Ellis .
