  1. “Xristos” = “Messiah” (Mashach) = “rubbing with oil”

  2. Anointing became a symbol of God's blessing, cleansing, enabling, and commissioning.

  3. Prophets, priests, and kings were anointed. Priests were consecrated, or set apart by the anointing - it was part of the cleansing rites connected with their taking office. Prophets were provided power or authority to speak for God by their anointing. Kings were given a special and exalted recognition - approval with both God and man.

  4. Isaiah 61:1-3 "The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion -- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor."

  5. II Samuel 23:1-5 "These are the last words of David . . . the man anointed by the God of Jacob, Israel's singer of songs: 'The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue. The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: `When one rules over men in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God, he is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings the grass from the earth.' 'Is not my house right with God? Has he not made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part? Will he not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire?'"

  6. As Priest, Jesus secures our salvation - He is the ultimate Savior. As Prophet, Jesus reveals God's will - He is the ultimate Revelator. As King, Jesus has been given the right to demand our total submission - He is the ultimate Conqueror.

  7. Peter's first sermon: "God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." (Acts 2:36)

  8. Peter's sermon at Cornelius' house: "You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached -- how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen." (Acts 10:37-40)

  9. Jesus was also anointed to be the Healer and Deliverer.

  10. James 5:14,15a "Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up."

  11. James 5:15b,16 "If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."

  12. I John 2:27 "As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit -- just as it has taught you, remain in him."

  13. "I counsel thee to . . . anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see." Revelation 3:18

  14. As never before, we need an anointing: to clearly see the holiness of God, to clearly see our own sinful state, to be alert to the temptations that are all around us, to have a far reaching vision that will enable us to see into eternity.
