Whythis project? • Fromother (ECK 1) projects we learned: • Teachers needvariation on their basic curriculum • The current search facilities do not provide enough useful teaching material (too much, not appropriate, not good enough) This includes:- general search facilities (the Googles)- specific search facilities (teachers search portals like Wikiwijs) EdReNe 8th Strategic Seminar, 7th-8th May 2012, Lisbon, Portugal
Ambition • Achieve a fundamental improvement for the teacher who wants to make a good mix of educational resources and wants to use this mix in an effective way. • 2 scenario’s: • A. How did we evaluate • Sessionswith 21 teachers • Demonstration of both scenario’s • Hands-onsearch excercisesandevaluations • Interviews (14) with content ownerswhoofferedlearningobjects. • Interviews with portal builders (botheducationalpublishersand open content owners) • Interviews withmetadataeditors
Someresults….. • Teachers appreciate searching for additional teaching material by (detailed) curriculum description (convenience, speed, better than Google) • Methodically working teachers prefer scenario A (search from the structure of the textbook) • Teachers expect that from Scenario A additional material found on the publishers website is judged on quality • Teachers expect that additional material is free and open (and easy to access) • Teachers wantedmore info (metadata) on the learningobjectstojudge the individuallearningobjects (type of material, typicallearning time, rating/peer review, …) • Queriesbuildbypublishersare notalwayswhatteacherswish or expect EdReNe 8th Strategic Seminar, 7th-8th May 2012, Lisbon, Portugal
Resultsand the future • The results are currently only available for internal use. • We need more investigation • We will start other projects (primary school, vocational training, project linked data)
Results– metadata • Takes a lot of time • Canonlybedonebyspecialists on the subject
Results– curriculum basedvocabularies • Nearlyeverybodyfindsitgoodto have a standard description of the curriculum • A detailedvocabulairygivesbetter search results • For Mathematicsandgeography the representation of the curriculum in the pilot was clearbut therewereremarks on complexcityand details
