They appear on the AP exam but are NOT in our textbook! • Biotic Potential: capacity for growth • factors allow a population to increase under ideal conditions, potentially leading to exponential growth • Intrinsic rate of increase (r) = rate of population growth if resources were unlimited • Environmental Resistance: factors acting jointly to limit the growth of a population -- no population can grow indefinitely • affect the young more than the elderly in a population, thereby affecting recruitment (survival to reproductive age) • Allows for die-offs after overshoots
