Clarify Small Groups vs Ministries • So what’s the difference? • All acts of Christian service is technically ministry; therefore small groups are a ministry……..But, • Let’s consider that ministry is defined modernly as a service, function, or profession of a minister of religion • Can we agree? • To recognize small groups as “small groups”, and • To recognize our collection of “small groups” as The Small Groups Ministry---and it is led by Pastor Bob
Clarify Small Groups vs Ministries (cont) • Ministries at Vista Assembly • Adult Ministry………….Pastor Myatt (also oversees all ministries) • Youth Ministry………….Pastor Rudy—includes middle school, high school, and college ages • Children’s Ministry……..Pastor Robert---includes nursery, pre-school, and elementary school ages • Music Ministry………..Pastor Greeyvin---includes worship teams, worship music, specials, lights, sound, instrument selection, and coordinating the order of service • Spanish Ministry……Pastor Greeyvin---includes all Spanish Ministries • Small Groups Ministry…..Pastor Bob----includes all existing & new small groups not otherwise in another ministry
Expectations • Leaders • Manage the small group • prepare the study material and any handouts • operate audio/visual equipment • be early & support the host with greeting group members • manage discussion, do not allow domination by others, and keep group on track with the subject and agenda • Give everyone a chance to speak and/or ask questions • Identify alternate leader when the Principal leader is absent
Expectations • Hosts • Prepare the meeting place • Arrange for refreshments • Make audio/visual equipment in home available • Establish ground rules for attire, shoes allowed or not • Identify areas of meeting place off-limits by group members • Identify members to support with getting meeting place back in order • Identify alternate host when the Principal host is absent
Common Ground Rules • Frequency of Meetings • Weekly • Every two weeks • Scheduling or Planning Breaks • None (members take the break as they need it) • Logical (take a small break in between curriculum) • Plan a seasonal break, such as Christmas, Easter, short time in summer…..align curriculum with breaks • Outreach Projects • Identify candidate projects and select one to support • Document the involvement of the members and recipients
Common Ground Rules • Sharing of study material and opinions • No cross talking, one person speaking only • Everyone given an equal opportunity to speak/provide opposing views and support them with scripture • Refreshment responsibility • Share this responsibility or help pay for it • Support the host with preparation and clean up
