The Role of the UnionBringing democracy to the workplace. • Unions provide employees with the right and opportunity to make their workplace better—from space changes to flexible work schedules. • Unions are democratic organizations, where members can set the priorities and the agenda, and select their representatives from amongst themselves.
Safeguarding the public interestHow public sector unions protect the public interest • In 1977, Congress passed the law leading to the recognition of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), finding that public sector unions- • Safeguard the public interest; and • Contribute to the efficiency of public service. 5 U.S. Code Section 7101(a)
The importance of our members. Why all of us make the difference. • Members are the key to meeting Congress’ vision for public sector unions. • Members propose solutions and pursue better work conditions, contributing to HUD’s efficiency. • Members advocate within the agency and before Congress for the positive and fair implementation of HUD’s programs, safeguarding the public interest.
The importance of our members (cont.) • Members have made all the difference— • Bargaining for flextime, telework, credit hours, and more. • Speaking with their members of Congress about the importance of comparable pay and decent health and retirement benefits. • Working to resolve disputes and difficulties in their workplace, including challenging unlawful discrimination.
