The Sun • Is a medium star • Gives off energy and heat • Is the largest object and in the center of our solar system • Has a mass of nearly 2 million trillion trillion kilograms • Has sunspots (cooler areas on the Sun) The sun giving off solar flares
The Stars • Stars come in different sizes • They are very hot gases that give off radiation • A star at the end of its life can collapse and become very small (only about the size of earth) • Stars are present in the daytime, however, the Sun’s light is so much brighter than the faint light coming from the stars.
Polaris is the North Star, the brightest star Polaris is the end of the Little Dipper’s “handle”
The Moon • Orbits the Earth • Each planet has a moon • Sometimes, moons may have different weather than their planets • Usually, if there is a halo around the moon, the next day will rain
Halo around the Moon Halos around the moon - or sun - are a sign of thin cirrus clouds drifting high above our heads. They are a sign of nearby storms.
The Earth • It takes 24 hours to complete a rotation • A complete revolution around the sun takes the Earth 365 ¼ days to complete • Its tilt is 23.5 • The Earth is ¾ water • There is life on Earth (humans, animals, plants)
