Laboratory Information • Log onto https://clew.uwindsor.ca for all laboratory-related material
Laboratory Notebooks • Hard-covered • No tear-out or removable pages (i.e. spiral notebooks)
Laboratory Notebooks • Purpose: To record: • Measurements • Calculations • Observations • Comments
Laboratory Notebooks • Etiquette: • Ink only; no pencil • No white-out for mistakes • No printouts, including Data Sheets • Number right-hand pages in top right corner: • Roman numerals i to iv for Table of Contents • Arabic numbers 1 to 60 after Table of Contents • New experiments start on right-hand pages
Pre-Laboratory Assignments • Purpose • Safety hazards: chemical and safety precautions • Flow chart: detailed steps and timeline • Pre-laboratorycalculations • Exp. 2 – Post-Lab; Exp. 3 – Post-Lab • Schedule is posted on CLEW • Worth: 1% of experiment
Glassware and Equipment • Balance • balance assignment • Keep area clean (possible deduction for untidiness) • Student locker: • locker assignment • Check-in: Introductory lab • Check-out: Experiment 5 • All glassware must be present, clean, and in same condition as received • Damaged or missing glassware deducted from caution card
Calculations • Request to review calculations will only be considered if: • written in ink (no pencil) • written directly in laboratory notebook (no loose-leaf papers) • within two weeks of when the experiment was performed
Answer Cards • All answer cards are due two days after the laboratory session • Grades are based on accuracy of unknown • Do not include calculations • Questions regarding calculations should contact GA’s directly (not at last minute!) • Cards will be marked once every group has submitted a card
Answer Cards 5%
Make-Up Experiment (Tentative) • Dates and times TBA (if time and space allows) • May be scheduled outside of regularly scheduled laboratory session • Choice of ONE experiment (Experiment 1 to 4) • Must attend the introductory laboratory to qualify for a make-up experiment • Laboratory grade assigned for repeated experiment will be the recorded grade • If the grade is lower than previously acquired, the lower grade will be the accepted grade
Attendance • Contact your GA immediately if absent • Medical note is required within 2 to 3 days of missed laboratory • Consequences • Limited room in laboratory sections
Laboratory Grades • Any disputes or concerns regarding a laboratory grade must be addressed no later than two weeks after experiment has finished • Ask GA to review calculations • Calculations done correctly imperative if planning to do make-up lab (if offered)
