  1. All you wanted to know about the OSSLT (a.k.a. The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test)

  2. What is the OSSLT? • It is a provincial test of the reading and writing skills that students have acquired across all subject areas to the end of Grade 9 • It is a requirement for graduation from high school • It is not “just” an English test

  3. Who writes the OSSLT? • The OSSLT is written by all current Grade 10 students in Ontario • It is also written by “previously eligible” students who have not yet written the test or who were unsuccessful on their first attempt

  4. When do I write the OSSLT? • The date for this year’s OSSLT is Thursday, March 29th in the morning • An alternate date or time for writing is not available • Students who are absent this year will have to wait until Spring 2013 to write the OSSLT

  5. How long is the test? • The test will take 2.5 hours in total • 75 minutes are allowed for each booklet and students must complete both booklets to pass • Students will have a 10-minute break between booklets • Students must remain in the test room until the end of the 2.5 hours

  6. What is on the test? • Reading tasks: informational texts; graphic text; a dialogue • Writing tasks: long writing (news report, opinion essay); short writing (including open response answers • Multiple-choice questions

  7. How do I know if I passed? • Individual results will be released by the end of June • Students who are successful will receive a report stating that they were successful • Students who are “unsuccessful” will receive a mark and information about their area(s) of weakness

  8. What happens if I fail? • You may write the test again next spring • You may elect to take OLC 4O1 – a credit course offered at the senior level that replaces the OSSLT as the graduation requirement and counts as an additional English credit (Student Services will help you with this if necessary)

  9. Does the mark on the OSSLT “count”? • Not exactly--the score is an indication to students of how close they were to succeeding on the OSSLT • Once a student has “passed” the test, no score will be reported • OSSLT results will have no effect on report card marks or acceptance to post-secondary education programmes
