There he meets up with Jim, who also ________ from _______. Huck plays a prank on Jim by ________ in Chap 10 and Jim gets hurt. Then Huck dresses up as _______________ and finds out from Mrs. Loftus that her husband _____________ and so Huck and Jim _________.

  3. Discussion 1. Why and how does Huck finally run away from Pap? How does his “adventure” start out with a mix of tension and excitement? Use a quote. 2. Who is “in charge” Jim or Huck? Why? Who acts more like the parent? Explain. 3. Explain what happens with the snakeskin. Why is this scene important? Is Huck sorry? Use a quote.

  4. 7-11 continued 5. What do we learn about Huck, and about society, during the incident when he pretends to be a girl, Sarah Mary Williams? 6. What do we know about Jim? Why do his superstitions appear to make him “dumb” while Huck’s superstitions don’t necessarily have the same effect? Compare and contrast Huck and Jim’s characters. 7. Find an example of satire from this set of reading. What is Twain mocking? Why not use overt criticism?

  5. Focus Questions for Chapters 12-16:Moral Maturity In your journals, after reading 12-16 in Huck Finn, please respond to the following questions in your journal. There will be a quiz on Wed. • 1. How does the episode with the murderers and the attempt to save them develop Huck’s sense of morality? What is his current code? From whom or what has he developed this code thus far? • 2. What does Jim try to teach Huck in his speech at the end of chapter 15? Use a quote. What does this reveal about Jim, and about the nature of Jim and Huck’s relationship? • 3. After the fog incident (end of Chap 15), where is Huck in terms of his “moral maturity”? Why does he prank Jim at all in this scene (he said he wouldn’t after the snake skin)? Is he still racist? In what ways is he conflicted about his societies teachings about race? In what ways has he treated Jim kindly? • 4. In chapter 16, Huck lies to two men on a skiff when he tells them Jim is white and (to keep them from checking this) has small pox. • Identify Huck’s reasons for considering turning him in. Use one quote. • Identify Huck’s reasons for considering not turning Jim in. Use one quote. • Ultimately, why does Huck do what he does? • How does he feel afterwards? Is this chapter a step back in his moral maturity?
