Color Selection • In general • Choose compatible color combination, avoid red-green, blue yellow, green-blue, red-blue pairs. • Use high color contras for character background pairs • Limit number of color, 4 for novice user & seven for expert • Use light blue for background areas only • Use white to code peripheral information • Use redundant coding (shape or typeface as well as color) 6-10% of males have defective color vision • Visual display unit • Luminosity diminishes in the order white, yellow, cyan, magenta, blue • Use white, yellow, cyan, or green against a dark background • For reverse video use nothing (i.e., black) red, blue, or magenta • Avoid highly saturated colors
Measurement of light • Luminous intensity; the power of source or illuminated surface to emit light • Luminous flux; the rate of flow of luminous energy • Luminance; the light emitted by surface • illuminance; the amount of light falling on surface • Reflectance; the ratio of the luminance and illuminance at a surface

CONTRAS & GLARE • Contras = 100 x (Lbright-Ldark)/ Lbright • Glare occurs when there is an imbalance of surface or object luminances in the visual field, the brighter sources exceeding the level to which the eye is adapted
